THANK YOU TO GOOD CO-WORKERS
Another great experience! The Trunk or Treat hosted by First Christian on Saturday evening turned outto be really worthwhile. Although pounds of candy were distributed (to parents’ concern and dentists’delight!), there were more good things received than just the sweets. The conservative estimate of children who came through our line was over 400, and we saw lots of families in addition to the children. Since there was a coloring contest, about 100 children of various ages competed for prizes. Even more registered in a drawing to receive an “I-Pod Shuffle” along with some other toys appealing to children, all of them leaving us their names and addresses so we can follow up with invitations to come worship and fellowship with us in the future. So we definitely made many good contacts with people from the community.
Because this event has already begun to bear fruit, we want to thank the many people who helped in different ways. A few decorated their car or truck, and stood out for nearly three hours – some even in costume, while countless others brought bags of candy in recent weeks to keep those trunks replenished, and all are appreciated. But I want especially to note the hard work and great ideas of Andy Frazier in
planning and developing the details of this year’s version of a seasonal tradition. He came up with the ideas of the coloring contest and give-away, including delivering some picture pages to local schools and pre-schools in advance, and his tireless work in supervising our efforts really sparked the whole event.
First Christian is blessed to have Andy and his family with us, and we clearly benefit from his attitude and energy in working not only with our children and youth, but with all aspects of our church life. As we see more evidence of new life and enthusiasm within the congregation, we continue to see Andy at work in the midst of it. The church has taken a positive step toward developing a good leadership team,
so now we need to keep praying for guidance as we look toward the future.
Noting Andy’s good work brings me to a point of expressing thanks once again for the several people who serve in numerous roles within this church. A few put in hours of work each week, but many bless us regularly with their faithful presence and participation, and it all adds up to good kingdom investment. We praise God for good co-workers. As Jesus said, there is a tremendous need all around us, and we
must all “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”[Matt.9:38] Thank you to those who serve – and there is always room for many more.

Yours in Christ,

Missions Minute

What kind of missions does FCC support?
There are literally thousands of worthwhile ministries and organizations seeking support from local churches and individuals so they can continue to do their work for the Lord’s kingdom or care of the local community. Obviously we can not help all of them. At FCC we have sought to find a balance of different kinds of ministries. We have identified three major groupings of programs which we try to support about equally.
Very general headings of these groups are Benevolence, Foreign Evangelism, and Education. Benevolence would include works such as children’s homes and Appalachian Christian Village that care for well-being and teaching of children or elderly. Our support for foreign evangelism would go to places like Art Jablonski in Poland and the Smelser family with Northern European Evangelism in Germany. Johnson Bible College and Emmanuel School of Religion are examples of those institutions in the education category which are preparing leaders for the next generation to continue the work of the church.
Join us Wed. Nov. 17 at 7:00pm to hear Art Jablonski report on his recent work.

Yes, I've been remiss again in posting to blog! I really am trying to get it together...but now a note from Dave's desk...

“TAKE ANOTHER LOOK”

I drove over from our home to Erwin twice on Monday. In the morning as I came over, all the colors I had marveled at on Sunday were gone! There were no trees visible at all. In fact, the very highway was not visible, nor even the white lines on it. I was driving over during that horrendous downpour Monday morning, and the visibility was nil for a while. Obviously,I (and a lot of other drivers)just had to pull
over for a few moments before continuing on. But then I came back again on Monday evening, just before sundown, and the sun was breaking through clouds and highlighting different hillsides and slopes of the surrounding mountains: it was absolutely gorgeous! Even more amazing than what I had enjoyed on Sunday, probably because of the contrast from the morning.
It is not news to mention that First Christian Church has been through some stormy times recently.Several people have expressed alarm at the low attendance for worship services and the low offerings each week. In times like these our vision seems extremely low; some would say that the bright days were all in the past. But just as the mountains in all their beauty were still there all day on Monday, so we need
to get our perspective clarified and realize that God’s hand has not left His church.
When you think back to Jesus’ ministry in the days just before He went to Calvary, the Gospels tell us that His Apostles didn’t seem to catch on to what was happening. As He anticipated the great drama of the Crucifixion, they were arguing with each other about who was going to have the greatest position in His coming kingdom. From His arrest in the Garden, during His trials, and then while He suffered and died, almost all of the Twelve fled in fear and fretted about saving their own skin. It seemed there couldn’t have been a more unlikely group with which to found the Church! But then the Risen Lord drew them back together and refocused their vision on what His ministry really had been about. After His Ascension, the Holy Spirit filled those same unlikely and apparently unqualified followers, and thousands of people were baptized and became part of the worldwide Body of Christ.
We have to remember that this is Jesus’ Church, not ours. And when His Spirit is at work in His people,“the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” [Matt. 16:18] Through the centuries the Church has had stormy times, but it is still His Church. And even when it is hard for us to see, He is still working in and among us. Now it is our privilege to be faithful servants and seek to let His Spirit lead us where He will.

Yours in Christ,
RDR

Missions Minute
Our missions program has been one of our strongest outreach ministries here at FCC. Over the years we have been blessed to be able to support a missions program that is a significant percentage of our general budget. Our mission’s budget for 2010 is slightly over 24% of our general budget. This does not include special offerings like the Haiti offering taken in February, or the special missions Sunday offering taken in August..
Unfortunately we are currently running behind on our weekly offerings in support of missions. So far this year our church giving to missions is about $10,000 behind what the budget calls for at this time of year. Fortunately, the Boone Estate is helping, but we should not and can not keep depending upon this source. Our missions program is an extremely important segment of our ministry and we must continue to support it generously. The solution to our deficit is not lower our budget, but rather to prayerfully and intentionally trust the Lord to bless us as we increase our personal giving to His work.
Next week we will look at how FCC categorizes the missions we support.

Broadcaster Highlights - October 5, 2010

Yes, I know it's been hit and miss on the blog lately! There are so many new and exciting things going on right now that quite frankly I forget to post to the blog, my apologies!
I'm thinking by 2011 the blog may be phased out since we now have the website thanks to Andy being so handy! Sorry Andy I couldnt resist that :)
I will slowly learn "how to" post the news letter directly on the web site.
I feel renewal in the air - I also feel the pressure starting to build as we approach the busiest season of the year. From now until the end of December it will be Katie bar the door. (I just keep tossing names out there!)
Stay centered loved ones; keep your eye on the Cross and make time for God and His word every day and especially when you are overwhelmed, let Him quiet your spirit and feed your heart! Join us this Sunday as we learn more about Heroes of the Old Testament:

AFTERTHOUGHTS OF AN APPLE FESTIVAL
Well, the big festival is over for another year! Our youth (aided by a host of
hard-working adults) earned a great sum from the parking provided to festival-goers, and the little booth in front of our building offered both balloons and maps for the festival locations – plus some good information about First Christian Church. We really do thank all those who worked so hard and helped this church to have a positive presence at this big occasion.
As I have thought about the occasion, I keep coming back to the apple part of it. Donna and I went up to Coffee Ridge as part of our annual enjoyment of the festival, and we bought our usual bushel of apples. There is nothing better than buying them fresh from the orchard (including a price far less than buying apples in a store – apples that have traveled halfway across the country or around the world to get here!)But the brothers Willis, who are working one of the last three orchards still fully functioning on the Ridge, said this may be the last year for their orchard to continue. People shun paying $12 a bushel for their apples and prefer to pay as much as a dollar an apple in stores. It is sad to think that a local industry is fading away due to short-sighted economic decisions.
When we first started coming to the festival, some 28 years ago, we hardly saw any apples available for sale among the booths. At the time it seemed strange that the festival claimed to be about apples, but they
were hard to find. Now there are several booths that sell them, but I’m not sure if any actually come from Unicoi County orchards. I guess that’s another sign of the times.Mulling over these thoughts brought me to think that any apples we get today will be gone at least by spring, if not long before. And that reminded me of the old stories of Johnny Appleseed, the legendary man who went everywhere planting apple trees all over the countryside. Assuming those stories to be based on some kind of fact, that represents someone providing apples far beyond the fruit of a single
season. A good apple tree, well cared for, can produce an abundance of apples – literally for a lifetime. And those thoughts brought me to the role of Christians in the church today. All of us are here for only a season, no matter how many years we may count up in the process. And the lasting benefit of our having been here can be found best in the seeds we plant along the way. Jesus’ commission to His followers was/is to “make disciples,” and the ongoing life of the church always depends on that very process. We in the church today have a tremendous blessing of having been able to enjoy the fruit of those who have gone before us. Our most important job now is to make sure we are planting trees that will bear fruit for generations to come.
Have you scattered any seed this week? Let’s all encourage one another to keep on keeping on!

Yours in Christ,
RDR

From the Ministers desk......

“THERE’S A LOT GOING ON AROUND HERE!”

By nature and by Jesus’ directions, churches are supposed to be about serving others and helping those in need. And I’m thankful to witness that this congregation takes that direction seriously.

For a relatively small church, 1st Christian in Erwin already gives a lot and serves a lot. The Operation Christmas Child for needy children around the world, now going on, is one prime example; so is the Backpack program in the summer for local children in need; all of Erwin and Unicoi County benefit from this church’s hosting and participating in the regular blood drives for the Red Cross; and the special offering for Haiti relief early last spring (of about $13,000 beyond regular offerings all on one weekend!) was amazing. Sincerely, as someone newly aware of the details, I am very impressed with the generous and giving spirit of this church. I could cite more examples of giving and serving beyond the normal (that is, what all churches do just to keep things running internally), but most of you are already familiar with them.

But in saying this I am also aware of the yet untapped potential for outreach and impact God has placed in our hands. Over the next few months I hope we can dream and pray together about how God can use this modest congregation to do great things in His Kingdom, both locally and even worldwide. When God gives great gifts to us, He is enabling us to do great things with them. Without a doubt, God has richly blessed us in this church, and I marvel to think what we may be able to be a part of because of such blessings.

Please add to your prayer list a request for God to guide us in grasping the vision of what He has in mind for us. It will take prayer, exciting imagination, and courageous effort, but it might well be the most exciting and life-changing chapter in the history of this church. Who knows? We may be part of something even bigger and better than what we’ve already seen!

Yours in Christ,
RDR

From the desk of Dave Roberts: We Begin Again

Although I have been around First Christian Church in one capacity or another for many years, I am beginning a new role as the Interim Minister now. This congregation and its leadership ministry have been through difficult times recently, but we are thankful to be able to serve with you and to look forward to what the Lord has in store for us as a new chapter opens. We will continue to pray for the Stamper family as they seek to know where the Lord is leading them, and many here are hoping that they find greater blessings in the days ahead than the sorrow and pain they have known for the last year and more.

When the Elders asked me to begin as Interim Minister on Sept. 1, I was sorry (in many ways) that I already had commitments that will take us away for about 10 days (two Sundays) in order to tend to our grandchildren in Kentucky. So though we have begun to serve with you, Donna and I will be absent right at the start for these few days. At the same time I must confess that there are several ways that I don’t regret being gone, in that we get to spend time with four precious children while their parents take a vacation trip (one that our son won in a contest). Three of them are almost 5 years old, and their sister is 6, so they are the age when grandparents are still extra special, and we thoroughly enjoy those times – exhausting though they are.

We look forward to discovering what God is about to do through this congregation, and we hope you have that same positive anticipation. Given all the negative elements of the world around us and the reasons we could cite that declare we are not able to make any difference, our view could be discouraging. However, when you factor in the power of God and the way His Spirit has moved through His people in times past, who knows what wonders the future holds for us.

As the chorus states, “We serve a mighty God.” It is important to remember what a small group of uneducated and unimpressive men in Galilee saw happen when Jesus left them with the Great Commission. Therefore we can only imagine what may be in store for us right here in Erwin, TN. Now we begin again – and since we’re walking by faith, let’s walk together as the Lord leads us.

Yours in Christ,

RDR

What? No Broadcaster?

II Peter 1:12-13a
So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory...

Sigh......I have no good exuse for not posting the Broadcaster this week, the truth is I totally forgot to do it. Period.
I recall my mother getting so angry with me at times because my exuse was, "I forgot!" I mean, how can you help it? How do you stop forgetting things?
I post notes, I leave things laying so I practically trip over them!

I cant tie a string around my own finger because I lack that particular grace.

Yet another reason to "firmly establish" yourself in the Word. Read it so often that you remember it, keep it always at the forfront of your mind!

So what do YOU do to remember? I invite your comments as this seems to be a serious issue...and not just for the "older" set either! I just keep thinking, if it's this bad now what will happen to me in ten years time? Thank goodness for GPS! Now if I can just remember where I put the darn thing!!!!!!! :)

God Bless you readers, I will post high lights of last weeks B/C soon.....or not?

Weekly Memory Verse
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 1 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

From the minister...

God commissioned him to be a missionary to the Assyrian capital of Nineveh.  Jonah, probably for many reasons, was not very receptive to God's direction and tried to run away from his responsibilities.  All of us are very much aware of the consequences that accompanied that rebellion on the part of Jonah.
After he was delivered from his experience in the belly of the fish, God called him again as a missionary to Nineveh, and this time Jonah answered the call.  The end result was a great revival as the entire city repented in sackcloth and ashes.  It also allowed us to see Jonah at his most selfish state.  A missionary who grieved over the fact that the people to whom he preached repented.
It would seem obvious that when God calls us to do something, we ought to do it.  It should be equally clear that if we refuse we could get into a lot of trouble.  And we should learn that when we do something for God we have to be willing to accept the results, leaving God to assess how he will handle the situation.
Just as Jonah, so many years ago, was given a commission by God to tell the message of repentance and the promise of forgiveness, we have been given a challenge to bear a message to the rest of the world. Paul describes it like this in his letter to the Romans: 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? (Romans 10.14-15a; NLT)

Grace and Peace,
Tim

Thinking of the Stamper family...

I'm pretty sure I'll never forget the phone call from Sandi Stamper a year ago today, August 12, 2009. It's as clear to me now as it was then, my disbelief as real. She told me words no mother wants to hear.

Andrea was in the hospital herself, she'd just had surgery that very day and I thought that is why Sandi was calling. But the words coming out of her mouth weren't about Andrea, but about Aaron. I couldn't even understand what she was saying at first...but slowly the words sank in. Aaron has Leukemia...
No one knew anything...for days shock, chaos and fear reigned.

I left immediately to go and sit with Andrea until her aunt could get there so Sandi could join Tim and Aaron in Johnson City. Andrea's main goal was to leave and go to her family, it was surreal. It still is. Aaron passed away on Friday, June 4, 2010.

Looking back it feels like five years have passed, then on the other hand it's like it was just yesterday. So much heartache, so much suffering.
In talking with Tim today I realize over and over again how inadequate I am in helping this family deal with a grief I just cant grasp, prayer is all I have to offer and I do always and I do now...

Father, today especially, I lift Tim, Sandi and Andrea up on the wings of prayer, this date is etched forever on their hearts as is June the 4th. Only you O Lord can help carry them through this next year of firsts, only You can help them deal with the pain of loss. I don't begin to understand it Lord, only You can see the whole plan. Be with them. In Jesus name...

Weekly Memory Verse
Jesus answered, “it is written: “Man does
not live on bread alone, but on every word
that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4

From the Minister...

If someone had been asked in 1968 which nation would dominate the world in watch making during the1990s and into the twenty-first century the answer would have been uniform: Switzerland. Why? BecauseSwitzerland had dominated the world of watch making for the previous sixty years. The Swiss made the best watches in the world and were committed to constant refinement of their expertise. It was the Swiss who came forward with the minute hand and the second hand. They led the world in discovering better ways to manufacture the gears, hearings, and mainsprings of watches. They
even led the way in waterproofing techniques and self-winding models. By 1968, the Swiss made 65 percent of all watches sold in the world and laid claim to as much as 90 percent of the profits.By 1980, however, they had laid off thousands of watchmakers and controlled less than 10 percent of the world market. Their profit domination dropped to less than 20 percent. Between 1979 and 1981,fifty thousand of the sixty-two thousand Swiss watchmakers lost their jobs. Why? The Swiss had refused
to consider a new development—the—the Quartz movement—ironically, invented by a Swiss. Because it had no main-spring or knob, it was rejected. It was too much of a paradigm shift for them to embrace.Seiko, on the other hand, accepted it and, along with a few other companies, became the leader in the watch industry. The lesson of the Swiss watchmakers is profound. A past that was so secure, so profitable, so
dominant was destroyed by an unwillingness to consider the future. It was more than not being able to make predictions—it was an inability to re-think how they did business. (James Enery White, Rethinking The Church, Baker Books, 1998, p. 20)
Past success blinds us to the importance of seeing the implications of a changing world and past accomplishments are no guarantee of future success.
Grace and Peace,
Tim

***Youth News***

The school year is officially back in gear, and with it will be many new activities competing for the time of your family especially your children. Kim and I are experiencing this now with Hannah and Noah both starting their first year of preschool and participating in activities like soccer and dance. Our schedules will soon be filled up and overflowing with more than we can possibly do. The challenge for all parents is, "How do we choose what is the best use of our time as a family?"
Psalm 119 is a fascinating passage of Scripture that uses the 24 letters of Hebrew alphabet to start each stanza. It is the largest chapter in the largest book of the Bible, right near the center or heart of God's Word. Do you know what it is about? It is a prayer of one who delights in and lives by God's Word. The second letter "Beth" begins in verse 9 and reads, "How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word." The last verse of the same stanza for the letter "Beth" says, "I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word."
Have you scheduled time for you and your family to dwell in God's Word? What priority does God have among your schedule and the schedules of your kids? Is He first, or does he get whatever is left over? At FCC we hope that our times to meet for Sunday School, Family Gathering, or our local outings will be more than just a thing to fill your schedule, but something that allows you and your family to make God a priority in your life. Those things we do at the church are just the beginning of making Him a priority in your home.

In Christ,
Andy Frazier

A NOTE FROM THE MINISTER...

You might be interested to know that: “Only 41% of Americans attend church services on a typical weekend. Each new generation becomes increasingly unchurched. Slightly over one half (51%) of the builder generation (born before 1946) attends church in a typical weekend. But only 41% of the boomers (born 1946-1964) and 34% of the busters (born 1965-1976) attend church on the weekend. The younger generation, the bridgers (born 1977-1994), indicates that only 30% attend church. (Surprising Insights from the Unchurched p. 33).
A German soldier was wounded. He was ordered to go to the military hospital for treatment. When he arrived at the large and imposing building, he saw two doors, one marked, "For the slightly wounded," and the other, "For the seriously wounded."
He entered through the first door and found himself going down a long hall. At the end of it were two more doors, one marked, "For officer" and the other, "For non-officers." He entered through the latter and found himself going down another long hall. At the end of it were two more doors, one marked, "For party members" and the other, "For non-party members."
He took the second door, and when he opened it he found himself out on the street. When the soldier returned home, his mother asked him, "How did you get along at the hospital?" "Well, Mother," he replied, "to tell the truth, the people there didn’t do anything for me, but you ought to see the tremendous organization they have!” The soldier’s comment describes many churches in our day: really organized, but accomplishing little. What ministries are we propagating within our community? In the way of ministry what are we accomplishing? What are we doing to build relationships? The unchurched are concerned with what we are doing in the name of Jesus.

Grace and Peace,
Tim

Join us for Worship this Sunday...

A recent facebook post written by Ann Rice caught my attention as well as several others. This is the direct quote as seen:

Rice wrote, “For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian ... It's simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

Rice then added another post explaining her decision on Thursday:

“My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me," Rice wrote. "But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been or might
become."

The saddest part of this commentary is the fact that this individual, as well as countless others, are seeing how un-Christlike Christians can be. It is a heartbreaking fact and one that we as individuals need to pray we can start changing. Being a Christian just doesnt make us perfect but oh how I wish I could be!!
If you've studied the word at all, why would we model ourselves after another human being? Especially knowing the only perfect person is Jesus Christ? God commands that He come first, the first Commandment sums that up as does the following: (btw, I dont recall a scripture that tells us to be like each other...)

Deuteronomy 6:4-8
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

As for separating ourselves from other Christians it's apparent the author didnt study or understand the book of Acts which points to none other than community, unity, forgiveness and love. We are all fallible!! With out Christ we become as nothing. I think the only point I agree on is that Christ indeed is central to my faith, and who can help but mentally quote John 3:16? As unperfect as we are we are still to commune with one another, we're still to be accountable to one another....

Hebrews 10:25 states:

Let us not give up meeting together, (emphasis mine) as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Meeting together is vital to the walk, meeting together is praying together, praying together is staying together. I thank God for the spiritual mentors in my life and for the Church families I've had the privilege to know here in TN, in KY and NC. I simply cant imagine trying to do this on my own.....
As a Christian I can only apologize and ask forgiveness for the times I've let those down who watch me. Keep you eyes only on Jesus brothers and sisters, commune with all fellow believers, pray to do your very best. I dare say we all have our crosses to bear.

In Him

From the Minister...

John Bisagno former Pastor of Houston’s First Baptist Church tells the story of his coming there as a candidate for the position of pastor many years ago. He said that as he entered the auditorium it was dimly lit, with just a few people huddled together. They were singing some old slow funeral type hymn that was depressing.
Later that day he took a walk in downtown Houston and came upon a jewelry store. It was some sort of grand opening and there were bright lights and a greeter at the door to welcome you in with a smile. Inside there was a celebration going on. There were refreshments and people having a good time talking and laughing with each other. They welcomed him and offered him some punch. He said that after attending both the church and the jewelry store, if the jewelry store had offered an invitation, he would have joined the jewelry store!
Bono from the band U-2 said, “Christians are hard to tolerate. I don’t know how Jesus does it.” Where have we gone wrong? Could it be that we have developed an uninviting subculture, as portrayed above, and refuse to change?
Dan Kimball in his book, They Like Jesus But Not The Church, says that we have lost touch with the mindset of this present generation. Our world has changed whether we like it or not. Galadriel, the elf queen, from the movie Fellowship of the Ring speaks of changes occurring in Middle Earth; “The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in earth. I smell it in the air.”
The fact is the world is changing, hence the reason this present generation is disappearing from most churches. Two-thirds of the twenty-somethings in any given community are leaving the church or want nothing to do with the church. As Kimball says, the churches’ response to this is denial, believing the culture will come to its senses and come back around to the church. There is too much at stake to wait and see.

Grace and Peace,
Tim

From the Minister:

COMEBACK!

The Center for Missional Research states that we are closing between 3,500 and 4,000 churches a year. This same research also indicates that we need to be starting about 13,000 churches a year just to keep up with the population growth. On average we are starting about 3,300 churches. It’s not rocket science to see that we are not even replacing the churches that are closing.
Those statistics should trouble us and we should begin to think about how to reverse this decline. The first thing we need to do is make sure we don’t become a casualty. So, WE ALL need to pray that the Lord would lead us to revitalization.
I am a great fan of sports comebacks, be it football, basketball, or baseball. It is exhilarating to watch a team or individual rededicate themselves to whatever discipline is necessary to play at a high level again and win. This is the reason a little book caught my attention sometime back. It is entitled Comeback Churches. It is practical advice from over 300 churches that have gone from declining or closing churches to become vibrant growing congregations. Is it easy to make a comeback? NO! Is it worth it? YES! It’s time to make the COMEBACK!

Grace and Peace,
Tim

BUSINESS AS USUAL ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH

In the past five years what has been happening in denominations across the board in the USA?

1) Presbyterians – 3.7% loss in 2007 – highest loss in one year in their entire history of 216 years.
2) Episcopalians – 115,000 loss in the last 3 years.
3) Methodists – Loss of 50,000 people a year and are at the lowest attendance in reported history.
4) One denominational leader recently said – they are actually crossing the line and the median average age of attender was over 60 years in age. And if trends continue, half of their population will be gone in the next 5 years.
5) 10% of the population considered themselves Baptist in 1995. In 2006 only 3% did.
6) Disciple of Christ - 11% loss.
7) Lutherans – 4% loss.
8) Reformed – 6% loss.
9) Church of Christ - 9% loss.
10) In the Assemblies - In the last 5 years we had a slight growth (2%) and planted 534 churches, but closed 500.

7 in 10 Protestants age 18-30, both evangelical and mainline, said they quit attending church by age 23.

If we keep doing business as usual, we will die!

Grace and Peace,
Tim

Broadcaster Highlights July 6,2010

From the Pastor:

A number of years ago Norman Cousins wrote an editorial in the Saturday Review in which he reported a conversation he had on a trip in India. He was talking with a Hindu priest named Satis Prasad. The man said he wanted to come to our country to work as a missionary among the Americans.
Cousins assumed that he meant that he wanted to convert Americans to the Hindu religion, but when asked, Satis Prasad said, “Oh no, I would like to convert them to the Christian religion. Christianity cannot survive in the abstract. It needs not membership, but believers. The people of your country may claim they believe in Christianity, but from what I read at this distance; Christianity is more a custom than anything else. I would ask that either you accept the teachings of Jesus in your everyday life and in your affairs as a nation, or stop invoking His name as sanction for everything you do. I want to help save Christianity for the Christian.”
Have we become so unlike the Jesus to whom we make our profession of faith? Ghandi said one time after visiting this country, “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” Where have we gone wrong? Is it possible that we need to return to the very basic tenets of the Christian walk? “Religion that God the Father accepts as pure and without fault is this: caring for orphans or widows who need help, and keeping yourself free from the world's evil influence.” (James 1.27 – NCV)

Grace and Peace,
Tim

“In the beginning”
One of the best things in life is getting the opportunity to begin something
new. Whether it is the first day of a new school, or the start of a new job, or the
first year of a marriage or the first moments of being a parent or a grandparent,
many of the feelings are the same. There is a lot of joy and excitement about the
possibilities, mixed with some terror about the unknown.
As followers of Christ, we can begin each new endeavor without fear
because of the first four words of the Bible, “In the beginning, God . . .” The most
amazing part of that phrase is the fourth word, “God.” Before even time began,
God already was! He goes out before everything we set out to do, like the pillar
of fire and pillar of cloud that directed and protected the Israelites. Our faith in thefact that God is wherever we go, gives us the confidence to do anything He calls
us to.The days, weeks, months, and years ahead of us are still unknown to us.
There are many difficult challenges ahead if we are to have a significant impact
on those in our community that need Christ. But this is why God has brought us
here to this place in the world at this time in history, and He already knows what
He wants us to do. We are the right people for the job and just need to be faithful
in doing the work He has prepared for us.On a personal note, on behalf of our whole family I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has welcomed us and helped us throughout our move from Florida to Tennessee. We praise God for all of you
and the opportunity He has given us to begin to know, love, and serve you in the
beautiful corner of His creation. I cannot wait to see what God is going to do.
In Christ,
Andy Frazier

We have met our goal for the 3rd delivery which will be made 7/6, matter of fact we've met the 4th delivery goal also! YES! As it stands now we only need a total of 80 more boxes of cereal cold or hot...that's it!!

Can we do it?? YES! I believe First Christian Church WILL do it! Just keep on bringing in those boxes of cereal OR you can contribute funds if you dont get out and shop, just earmark your $$ Backpack Program.

By the way, a few of those pictures are of the downstairs area where the food is being kept. A couple are of a trip to Sam's in JC to buy cereal and oatmeal......then we have several of volunteers helping pack up the goodies to be delivered!

Fathers Day Breakfast...

My husband snapped a few pix on his phone and e'd them to me. I mean, he had all the time in the world Father's Day Sunday. The ladies that cooked only had to be there at like 7:00am no biggie...NOT!! :) We lovingly slaved away over hot stoves to prepare a huge country breakfast!! Now gentlemen you KNOW what happens when a kitchen full of chatty women get together yes? Of course we only talked about how very much we love our men...........snicker, seriously!
The menu consisted of biscuits and home made sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sausage patties, lucious hashbrown casserole, baked apples and cherry donut holes....I think that's it? Oh, and homemade stawberry freezer jam.
The tables and decorations looked very nice and the theme was of course sports!
Upon arriving the gentlemen received the standard door prize ticket and if the number was just right they received a home made pound cake!
And when looking at the pictures you wonder what some of these guys have on their heads, yes, they are crowns.....King Daddy-o's for the day, ok I cant even believe I typed that. All in all it turned out quite nice. Thanks to all who pitched in and again, congrats to Mark Whitson who was named Father of the Year but sadly had to work!! Our next event is the FCC picnic in August...watch for details!
