29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the
Lord is one.] 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12:29-31
When hurricanes pound our coasts….and earthquakes bring upheaval to California cities….and
tornadoes and ice storms leave tens of thousands without power our friends and neighbors are ready to
embrace us with aid and comfort…ready to make selfless sacrifice in an effort to rebuild lives and
restore order. But what happens when it is a Third World country… What happens when it involves
those living in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere?
Our response, as Christians, to the catastrophe in Haiti should be no different. One day the
world’s governments and relief agencies will pull out and the Haitian people will be left to themselves…
unless Christians remain true to the calling of the Gospel and the grace of God. For the early church
nothing would do but to minister to the needs of others.
This was a fundamental part of the fellowship of the early church….”they gave to anyone as he
had need” (Acts 2.44). In an effort to relieve the burden of the impoverished, James reminds the church
that, real religion is to reach out the homeless and loveless in their plight. When there was a famine in
Jerusalem the Macedonian churches gave beyond measure in an effort to relieve suffering.
This congregation has been challenged to prayerfully search our hearts and contribute
accordingly to the relief effort in Haiti. On February 14th a special offering will be taken to aid the
ongoing relief effort in Haiti. Those monies will be forwarded to International Disaster Emergency
Services (IDES). Let me remind you that 100% of your contribution will go to the Haitian relief
effort. May this be the beginning of our efforts to help the growing needs not only of our Christian
brothers and sisters, but all peoples in Haiti.
I believe it was William Barclay who said, “The tragedy of life so often is not that we lack good
intentions but that we fail to turn them into action.” Giving may start as a response of the heart, but it must
move on to an act of the will…If we do not finish the work, then the final analysis is that all our good
intentions amount to nothing.
Grace and Peace,
Tim
