First Christian Church of Erwin seeks help from our community for Haiti.
We will be collecting donations to benefit the people in Haiti who have lost so much. The communities donations will be combined with those of First Christian Church and sent to an organization called IDES (International Disaster Emergency Service.) IDES is a Christian organization and 100% of all donations will go to help the earthquake victims.
You may mail your contributions to us, bring them by our office or come visit us for Worship on Sunday, February 14, the date the congregation of First Christian Church will donate and dedicate their special offering for Haiti.
In the spirit of love, in the spirit of being a good neighbor please search your hearts and give what you can to this worthy cause.

It has been heart wrenching, this past week, to watch all the devastation from the earthquake inHaiti. I have driven through much of that crippled city and walked through many of those neighborhoods.
It has been irritating to think that many were completely oblivious to Haiti’s poverty until it wasmade news worthy by this catastrophe – Irritating that it takes a catastrophe of this magnitude to awaken
us from opulent slumber…where were the media and many of the relief organizations prior to thisdisaster when most Haitians were living on less than a dollar a week and nearly 77,000 yearly are dyingfrom starvation, disease and corrupt government?
I’ll tell you where they were…building their kingdoms…passing out extravagant bonuses to CEO’s of bailed out companies; plastering their walls with kindergarten slogans touting the millions
their companies have saved this past year and calling for more. C. S. Lewis said, “God whispers to us in
our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts to us in our pains: It is His megaphone to rousea deaf world” It is exasperating to know that we are more concerned with building our kingdom than HIS. It is
time that God spoke to us through his megaphone arousing us from selfish, catatonic abundance to full awareness of a lost and dying world. In the coming months and years the church must step up and
provide more than relief. There will be great opportunities for the advancement of the gospel in Haiti. A dear friend of mine, and former missionary to Haiti, said, “we always found Haiti open to the Gospel
(about 11,000 baptisms in 16 years). It will be more now as great numbers see God as their only hope.” As a church we must provide MORE than physical relief; for what good is it if we feed their bodies and allow their souls to perish. Jesus tells us to whom much has been given; much will be expected. Whatever we do let’s do it to glorify God.

17) One day as Jesus was teaching the people…The Lord was giving Jesus the power to heal people. 18) Just then, some men were carrying on a mat a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and put him down before Jesus. 19) But because there were so many people there, they could not find a way in. So they went up on the roof and lowered the man on his mat through the ceiling into the middle of the crowd right before Jesus. 20) Seeing their faith, Jesus said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."
Luke 5:17-20
This passage from Luke 5 can be seen as a positive motivation for church growth; bringing others into an encounter with Christ. As a body of believers this is the mindset we must develop. Our existence – our purpose – in this life is about glorifying God by introducing others to Jesus.
In order to do this we must think and act outside our boxes – or in this case outside the four walls of our church. It requires us to look for the hurting in our communities; getting out of our comfort zones in an effort to bring people to Jesus – not just invite but persuade, encourage and convince them that
Jesus can heal their hurts.
In order to bring people to Jesus we must overcome obstacles. Some of these obstacles are in the form of our own selfish desires. Paul tells us we should think more highly of others than ourselves. Other obstacles are in the form of our traditions; traditions that may be inhibiting the return of visitors to our worship, our Sunday school and Bible Study.
Church growth also means paying attention to our young people. If I were to ask you what this church needs most everyone would respond, “We need more youth.” But what are we willing to do to make our church more youth friendly? What programs are we willing to implement? What structural changes are we willing to make? How far are we willing to go to bring the youth to Jesus? What steps are we ready to take to introduce people to Jesus? So they went up on the roof and lowered the man on his mat through the ceiling into the middle of the crowd right before Jesus.

Neither rain nor hail nor sleet nor SNOW could stop those willing
participants from giving blood on
Friday the 8th!
In spite of the weather a successful blood drive was held here at FCC. The quota was for 45 productive units, we collected 40!! Not bad at all considering how bad the weather was! Giving the gift of life from our Church were: David Eunson, Ron Hicks, Katie Jones, Dave Roberts and Shelton Thompson. A special thanks to David Eunson for shoveling the snow away from the doors! Also a special thank you to Gail Thompson for filling in at the last minute for a volunteer worker who couldn't make it due to the snow and ice!
